Land-based and online sports betting bill received approval from Puerto Rico’s Legislative Assembly

Back on the previous week, on Sunday, 30th of June, a project that will legalize betting on eSports, fantasy sports and sporting events received approval by the Senate and the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico.

As per reports, the proposed project has been duped HR 2038 bill, under this bill companies will be able to permit legal land-based and online sports betting, however, it does not allow for betting on amateur sports on the island.

Significantly the bill is yet to come in motion, as Governor Ricardo Rosselló has yet not passed his judgment.

According to sources closely following the matter, an institutional structure will be provided by The new Gaming Commission for already existing groups which oversee gambling in Puerto Rico including the Gaming Division of the Tourism Office of the Department of Economic Development and the Horse Racing Industry Administration. Gov Rosselló will appoint a commissioner for spearheading it with the consent of the Senate for a decade long tenure along with a board of seven members, that includes a couple from the private sector.

Significantly, back in the previous week, an amendment was made on the language on the bill, which states that, while any type of business is eligible to receive the bill, licenses will only be provided to a business that has a concrete business plan and is compliant with local health and safety requirements.

A language that will see that the new commission does not provide licenses to entire sectors at once, for instance gas stations and grocery stores is also included in the bill.
Additionally, the bill also says that any business that wishes to own this upcoming license should have its point of sale more than 100 meters away from religious centers, or schools, private or public rehabilitation facilities for addicts.
